Solid Waste

Solid Waste and Material Information

The City of Atlantic Beach provides once weekly solid waste removal, including trash, garbage, yard waste, appliances and tires to over 5,000 customers within the corporate limits of the City.  The City is divided into five zones, with collections of garbage, yard waste and recycling occurring on the same day.  Refer to the Garbage Pickup Schedule and the Recycling Pickup Schedule for days of pick up, or contact the Public Works Department at (904) 247-5834 for further clarification.  The City’s solid waste contractor is Advanced Disposal Services.  They may be contacted at (904) 731-3440.  Most areas north of the Dutton Island Road are served by contractors hired by the City of Jacksonville (904) 630-CITY(2489).

Household Garbage

Please help us provide efficient, safe and timely service to all residents by doing the following:

  • Place all household garbage, yard waste and recycling bins curbside, within five feet of the traveled portion of the street, by 7:00 a.m. on your designated household garbage days.
  • Contain household garbage in City provided toters (maximum weight limit is 150 lbs.).  Any new residents (inside City limits) who find they do not have an Atlantic Beach garbage toter at their location may call Public Works at (904) 247-5834 to request delivery.  Advanced Disposal will deliver a toter within one week. 
  • Excess waste must be contained in boxes or sealed plastic bags weighing 40 pounds or less.
  • Although toters remain the property of the City, residents are encouraged to neatly stencil house numbers (2” max height) on the containers for ease of identification.  Contact Public Works at (904) 247-5834 for replacement of broken toters.
  • Wrap all broken glass in newspaper to seal for safety and place only in toters.
  • Call Public Works at (904) 247-5834 for appliances and tires to be picked up (normally Tuesday and Friday).  In general, discarded furniture may be set out with household garbage.
  • Separate garbage from yard waste for collection.
  • Please do not place garbage on or in front of vacant lots for pick up.  Garbage is only picked up at properties improved for occupancy.
  • Garbage must not be stacked over water or gas meters, under low hanging tree limbs or utility wires, or beside mailboxes.
  • Do not place medical waste in garbage receptacles.
  • Do not place car parts curbside for collection -- contact a local scrap dealer for disposal.

Appliances / Tires

Appliances and tires are picked up every Tuesday and Friday by appointment.  To schedule a pick up, contact the Public Works Department at (904) 247-5834. 

Appliances must be empty and placed curbside (but out of the street) the night before.  Any refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, or similar airtight unit having an interior storage capacity of 1.5 cubic feet or more must have the door removed. 

Residents may place two scrap tires at a time (no more than six per year), off the rims, at the curb in front of their house. To schedule a pick up, contact the Public Works Department at (904) 247-5834.
 
The recycled tires are used for asphalt for highway resurfacing, sports field subsoil, parking lots, arenas, surfacing under playground equipment, other molded products and tires.

Construction / Building Materials

Collection of construction debris and/or building materials is limited to 1 cubic yard per week, not to exceed 5 feet in length (filling approximately two construction wheelbarrows) and only if the work was performed by the homeowner.  Contractors are required to dispose of debris resulting from paid home improvement efforts.  Building material is collected on the same day as household garbage, but should be separated from the garbage.   

  • Lumber must be cut into pieces 4' or less in length.  Exposed nails need to be flattened or removed. 
  • Concrete chunks, tiles, etc. must be in a container that can be lifted and that
    weighs less than 40 pounds. 
  • Propane gas tanks must be empty and have valves removed.

Recycling

Recycling carts may be obtained from the Public Works Department at (904) 247-5834 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Cart will be delivered within one working week.

Each home will receive one 65 gallon cart at no cost to residents.  Use cart only for recycling (no household garbage or yard waste).  Only recyclables placed in cart will be picked up. 

Typical recycling items include the following:

  • Plastic food, beverage, detergent bottles and jugs with narrow necks and screw-on tops labeled with a 1 through 7.  (Please place tops/lids in garbage and rinse out containers)
  • Glass bottles and jars (green, amber, and clear; please place tops/lids in garbage)
  • Metal & aluminum cans
  • Newspapers & inserts
  • Magazines, catalogs & telephone books
  • Brown paper bags
  • Corrugated cardboard (must be able to free-fall from cart when emptied)
  • Boxboard (cereal or food boxes, remove plastic or wax paper liners)
  • Plastic bags, milk cartons, or juice boxes
  • No motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticide or fertilizer bottles 

*Note: For all items, labels do not need to be removed.

Recycling update: Advanced Disposal, the City’s Sanitation Franchisee, is now delivering recycled materials to Republic Services’ new single stream recycling center in north Jacksonville.  As a result, the range of materials that may be recycled has expanded.  The full list of recyclable materials includes:

  • Plastic food containers, beverage containers, detergent bottles, cleaning containers, all plastics that are labeled 1 - 7.  Labels do not need to be removed.  Plastic bags are accepted.
  • Styrofoam: Plastic Category #6 (Large styrofoam items need to be broken up to fit in cart)
  • Glass bottles and jars; please place tops/lids in garbage; labels do not need to be removed) 
  • Metal and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans, aluminum baking tins
  • Steel Food containers
  • Newspapers and inserts, craft paper, paper towel cores  
  • Magazines, catalogs, paperback books & telephone books
  • Brown paper bags
  • Corrugated cardboard (flattened and must be able to free-fall from cart)
  • Paperboard cartons and boxes (including milk, juice, broth, soup and other food and drink containers).
  • Shredded paper

 Yard Waste

Lawn, tree and other vegetative debris are picked up curbside once a week.  All yard waste is to be behind the curb or edge of pavement.  Please do not block stormwater flow by staging yard debris in the gutter or on the street.  Green waste (grass clippings and leaves, shrub trimmings, tree limbs, palm fronds and Christmas trees) is delivered to the City of Jacksonville Mulch Site at the old Kings Road landfill. 

  • Containerized yard waste should not be placed at the curb until after 6:00 p.m. the evening before scheduled pickup.
  • Grass clippings and leaves must be in open/uncovered cans of 20-48 gallon in size, or in sealed plastic bags and must not exceed 40 pounds.
  • All limbs must be in lengths five foot or less and six inches or less in diameter.  No item or stump may weigh more than 40-pounds.  
  • Separate yard waste from household garbage for collection.
  • Don't use cardboard boxes for yard waste.  Once emptied they become windborne litter.
  • Collection of yard waste is limited to 5 cubic yards once weekly.  This is approximately the size of a standard pickup truck load.  Any excess will be picked up on your next pickup day, or you may arrange for a special pickup at a per cubic yard rate approved by the City.  The Advanced Disposal Service's Supervisor will make the determination of the amount of excess yard waste.
  • Yard waste must not be stacked over water or gas meters, under low hanging tree limbs or utility wires, or beside mailboxes.
  • Yard debris may not be placed on vacant lots, City street medians or parks.  These are considered to be illegal dumps, are subject to a fine and delay pick-up of debris.
  • Do not mix construction debris, lumber, fencing or building materials with yard debris.

Green waste produced by a Landscape Contractor, Tree Surgeon, or other tree removal operation must be disposed of by the Contractor and is not included within the requirements of the City’s Sanitation Contractor’s responsibility.  Contractors or homeowners also may require a permit from the Tree Conservation Board authorizing the removal of protected trees.  For questions concerning permit requirements, contact the Building Department at 247-5826.  

Items that are NOT yard waste include:  fencing, landscape timbers, garden hoses, dirt, planters, flower pots and yard decorations.

Holiday Schedules

No pick-up holidays include New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  Routes will be pushed back by one day following a holiday.  For example, if Christmas Day is Thursday and your normal service day is Thursday, you will be serviced on Friday.  Customers who are normally serviced on Friday of that week will be serviced on Saturday.

Mulch

Mulching Tips:

-- Use a mulching blade and leave your grass clippings on the lawn -- one bag of clippings contains up to 1/4 pound of organic nitrogen that is vital to lawn and plant growth.
-- Use your oak leaves and pine needles as mulch.  This helps the soil retain moisture, reduces weeds and prevents erosion.
-- Make your own backyard compost.  You may include vegetable waste from the kitchen in your compost pile. 

Dead Animal Removal

The Public Works Department removes dead animals from the right-of-way on city roads and state roads within Atlantic Beach city limits.  The City does not remove dead animals from yards or from the woods near a yard.  The phone number to call for removal of dead animals within the city limits is (904) 247-5834.  If a citizen observes a hazardous situation during non-working hours, please call 911.

Hazardous Material Disposal


The City of Jacksonville holds an annual collection of hazardous material at the Beaches.  Collection days will be announced in the City newsletter and in the local press.

Oil based paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste including rechargeable alkaline and regular duty batteries, photographic chemicals, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides, antifreeze and paint thinner must be taken to:

Disposal of Oil

Used oil is prohibited by law in landfills.  Never pour used motor oil in the garbage, on the ground or down storm drains.  It can poison drinking water.  One gallon of improperly disposed waste oil could pollute one million gallons of fresh water.  Many local oil retailers accept used motor oil for recycling from residents at no charge (maximum 5 gallons per consumer per trip).  Used oil may be taken to the following locations for disposal:

Disposal of Paint

· LATEX PAINT:  Remove the lid, let the paint dry out and place next to garbage receptacle after the paint has hardened, without replacing the lid. 

· OIL BASED PAINT:  Must be taken to the Duval County Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility or turned in during the annual collection of hazardous material at City Hall.
