Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth 2025Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Progress in Atlantic Beach

The City of Atlantic Beach is proud to recognize Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history that commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, delivering the news of freedom to those who had not yet heard, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This day, blending "June" and "nineteenth," marks a true turning point in the pursuit of liberty for all.

A City Committed to Equity and Understanding

The City of Atlantic Beach officially designated Juneteenth as a city holiday on January 24, 2022, underscoring our commitment to promoting racial equity, cultivating knowledge, appreciating African American history and culture, and encouraging respect for all people. City offices are closed on Juneteenth to allow our community to observe and reflect on this significant day.

While Juneteenth marks a monumental victory, it also serves as a poignant reminder of the long and ongoing struggle for civil rights and true equality. In Atlantic Beach, we believe in honoring the past, acknowledging the journey, and continuing to work towards a future where justice and opportunity are accessible to everyone.
