Roundabout Feasibility Study

The City of Atlantic Beach is actively reviewing the five-way traffic intersection at Sherry Drive, Seminole Road, and Plaza Drive to enhance its safety and efficiency. This intersection is known to be complex and a point of frustration for many drivers. The City is seriously exploring a roundabout, potentially a unique "peanut-shaped" design, at the intersection, backed by data collection and public discussion, as part of its broader commitment to traffic safety and efficiency.

  • Roundabout Feasibility Study: The North Florida Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) is conducting a feasibility study for a roundabout at this five-way intersection.
  • Data Collection: As part of the study, consultants performed traffic data collection using cameras in January 2025 (specifically January 16-18). This data will be crucial in understanding the current traffic patterns and informing the design of any proposed changes.
  • Public Discussion: The project was discussed at a City Commission Town Hall meeting on January 25, 2025, where the TPO consultant presented information. This meeting engaged the community and gathered input on potential solutions. Here is the presentation made during the meeting by the TPO consultant. Here's the Jan. 25 Town Hall meeting video.
  • "Peanut-Shaped" Roundabout: One of the specific ideas being explored is a "peanut-shaped" roundabout with two circles. This unique design might be an attempt to address the complexities of a five-way intersection and potential concerns about fire truck access, which has been a past issue with traditional circular roundabout proposals.
  • Safety Action Plan: The City of Atlantic Beach has a broader Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP) aimed at achieving zero traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
  • Historical Consideration: The idea of a roundabout at this intersection is not new; previous city commissions have discussed it.
  • Funding Considerations: The City is seeking external funding to support any significant improvements.
